SSE #96: Herbs and Athletes

Objectives:
  • For each of the following herbs: Arnica, Astragalus, Cayenne, Cordyceps, Devil’s Claw, Echinacea, Elderberry, Ginger, Ginseng, Guarana, Rhodiola, Valerian, and Willow Bark, be able to:
    1. Describe at least one claimed benefit that athletes might experience by using the herb
    2. Describe the relative strength of scientific support -- non-existent, equivocal, moderate or compelling – for efficacy of the herb
    3. For seven of these herbs, list one potential harmful side effect of using the herb .
  • Be able to describe the extent to which the US government requires supplement manufacturers to prove the safety and efficacy of herbal and other dietary supplements
