SSE #90: Diabetes, Exercise and Competitive Sports

Objectives:
  • Be able to describe the main characteristics of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus.
  • Be able to describe the change in the blood concentration of insulin during exercise in those who do not have diabetes. Explain how that change occurs and contrast the blood insulin response between \"normal\" athletes and those with Type 1 diabetes.
  • Be able to describe important effects of under-insulinization and over-insulinization during exercise in those with Type 1 diabetes and in those with Type 2 diabetes who must use insulin to control their blood glucose.
  • Be able to describe the symptoms of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia.
  • Explain why persons with Type 1 diabetes who have retinal damage should be cautious about undertaking a strenuous resistance-training program.
  • Be able to describe some of the metabolic adaptations to exercise training in those with Type 2 diabetes.
  • Explain how athletes with Type 1 diabetes can be successful in their sports in spite of their disease.\r\n
  • Describe how some of the complications of diabetes may affect athletes in various sports.
  • Describe what procedures athletes with diabetes should follow to control their blood glucose levels before, during, and after exercise.
